The Temporary Accommodation Notification Duty

The Temporary Accommodation Notification Duty (TAND) is an important new step towards keeping children connected to the health, education and support they need when they move into temporary accommodation.

Shared Health Foundation has produced webinars for local authority housing teams, school staff, GP staff and health visiting teams, which outline the new statutory duties and highlight the recommended steps for support services to take after receiving a notification from local authorities.

Training for GP Staff: Recommended Minimum Response

Training for Health Visitors

This training features guest speakers Jane Cook and Lisa Gavin, experienced advocates for homeless families who have been supporting the development and implementation of this important new legislation.

Training for Schools

These webinars are designed for all school staff and focuses on how we can respond effectively, compassionately, and consistently, when a child is living in temporary accommodation.

Temporary accomodation notification duty requirements

What information is required to be collected?

There is not yet a single nationally mandated TAND notification form. Government guidance says notifications should be made using existing data-sharing arrangements and local authority case-management systems; where systems cannot support this, notifications can be sent by email.

The guidance does, however, specify the information that a notification to health visiting should contain:

  • child's name and date of birth
  • confirmation that the child is now in temporary accommodation
  • temporary accommodation address and postcode
  • parent's contact number
  • name of the person reachable on that number.
